Confusing Reality

“I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will, which I now exert to leave you.” – Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë

Adam and I are silent for the rest of the night. I don’t sleep. I can’t. Not with what I have learned, and what I now realize I don’t know. Each moment that passes only brings confusion and even more questions.

What the hell is going on?

Part of me wants to believe that the truth is a mixture of what Adam and I were told. Maybe war is truly coming, or maybe it has already begun. Maybe the creatures were created for both purposes. If something happens and the domes fall, humans will have no choice but to adapt to life on the surface, which may or may not be possible. The underground communities are only functional if the air can be filtered, but the filters are produced in the domes. A catch-22 if I ever heard one.

But what it all boils down to is the fact that war is inevitable. I have no idea which side we are on anymore, or what the sides even represent. I thought we were fighting to prevent the creation of more creatures. With what they are doing here, that is still part of it, but more importantly, this must be about finding a way to exist peacefully, something that humans have never been able to do. Ever. Our history is filled with chaos and death and destruction. It’s why we are in this situation.

When the sun eventually rises, the lab fills, but Vicor and Grant are suspiciously absent. The rats move about performing their tasks. They work as if they are being watched, their eyes constantly shifting to the ceiling.

Adam has been watching more closely today. He was the picture of relaxation yesterday, but today he wears uncomfortable apprehension. I feel guilty for ruining the perfect bubble of his life. He thought he was doing good, and I guess in a way he still could be, but I completely turned his world upside down. We are both being used, the problem is, neither of us knows why, or how.

The door to the lab opens and one of Vicor’s minions come stalking toward my cage. “Let’s go, bitch. Time to play again.”

He damn near rips the door off my cage to get to me. I don’t try to hide because there’s nowhere for me to go. As much as I hate to admit it, compliance is my best friend right now. Vicor is going to make this hurt no matter what I do, but maybe if I cooperate, I can get points for good behavior.

Or more answers to the millions of questions floating around in my head.

“Where are we going?” I ask.

The backhand catches me off guard and stars float across my vision.

“Hey!” Adam yells. I’m not sure if he is now defending me, or if it is something else completely.

“It’s fine, Adam,” I say and hold up my hand to show that I am okay.
